COMM_V 205 - Introduction to Management Information Systems

Course Description

This course introduces students to key concepts and practices in Management Information Systems, covering both the strategic role of information technology in modern organizations and the practical skills needed to work with data. The course is organized into two parts: (A) Business Technology Management and (B) Data Management and Analysis. Part A focuses on how firms use information technology to create value, support decision-making, and sustain competitive advantage, with topics including database design and data visualization. Part B develops hands-on proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Python, equipping students with foundational skills in data management and analysis. No prior technical experience is required. Content is delivered through a combination of pre-class materials and in-class sessions, with learning reinforced through individual and group exercises that allow students to apply concepts and practice technical skills in real-world contexts.

The course also explores connections between information systems and broader organizational and societal challenges, including responsible business practices and sustainable development. Assessment includes in-class exercises, assignments, and examinations covering each part of the course. By the end of the course, students will have developed both the conceptual grounding and practical competencies to engage confidently with information systems and data analysis in professional business settings.

This course addresses responsible business and sustainable development through the lens of information systems and data analysis. Topics include the role of technology in supporting accessible and inclusive learning environments (Quality Education), the use of information systems to enhance business processes, productivity, and economic growth (Decent Work and Economic Growth), the role of IT infrastructure and innovation in enabling e-business and protecting critical systems from cyber threats (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), the use of data management and business intelligence tools to promote transparency and accountability within institutions (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and the role of information systems in facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing across sectors and borders (Partnerships for the Goals).

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • Identify the role of IT in daily business activities.
  • Explain the fundamental concepts and technologies of information systems.
  • Describe the key issues related to managing information systems.
  • Recognize the importance of data and information in decision making.
  • Apply the following Microsoft Excel functions: IF, AND, OR, COUNTIFS, SUMIFS, VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, CONCATENATE, LEN, TRIM, SUBSTITUTE, REPLACE, FIND, SEARCH, and a few others for the purpose of managing and analyzing data.
  • Practice the basics of Python programming and use Python for the purpose of managing and analyzing datasets.
